The defunct Greenfield Tap and Die plant has come down, all that is left now is the old GTD smokestack - the landmark of Greenfield's Meridian Street. I visited the site this evening because tomorrow at 9:15 AM, the smokestack is coming down.
Greenfield is one more in the list of many New England 'mill towns' that have never really recovered from the collapse of the US manufacturing industry. Like Holyoke, it seems too empty for its size. Holyoke, though, is a lot worse-off in the crime and poverty departments. GTD rode on the World War II boom for a while, but in the end automation, mismanagement, and consolidation killed the plant on Green River.

You can't call it a photoblog unless you do the shutter speed trick at some point. So here it is.

Known as either the Whately Diner or the Fillin' Station, the sign on the road merely says "Diner." You're not allowed to eat here unless you are a trucker, or you are drunk.
We had some downtime today, I guess my webhost sucks. Hopefully they will make good on their "99.9% uptime guarantee."

Question?
I am doing some research on 1940-1950
manufacturing sites in Greenfield, MA such as
G.T.D. and millers Falls Tools and others.
Any thoughts on where I can find old photos
and general historical info on these operations as they existed back then?
Thankyou for any help possible!
